Christ’s Example
Christ’s Example || Philippians 2:5–8 (NIV)
Evangelist Hollywood (Denise) Barrett-Abraham
Evangelist Hollywood (Denise) Barrett-Abraham
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant… he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
Reflection
There is no greater display of strength than restraint. No greater display of power than humility. In this passage, we see Jesus—fully God—choosing surrender. He did not cling to status. He did not demand recognition. He chose obedience. He chose humility. He chose love, even when it cost Him everything.
During this Lenten season, Christ’s example confronts the parts of us that still resist surrender. God is shaping our hearts to reflect His Son—not just in what we say, but in how we live. He is healing our attachment to pride, our need to be seen, our desire to control outcomes. He is teaching us that true elevation in His kingdom begins with humility.
Jesus did not lose His identity by surrendering—He revealed it. His obedience was not weakness—it was alignment. In the same way, God is inviting us to trust Him with the places where surrender feels uncomfortable. Where is God asking you to release your grip? Where is He calling you to serve instead of striving? Where is He shaping your character through quiet obedience?
To carry Christ’s mindset means choosing humility daily. It means loving when it is easier to withdraw. It means trusting God’s process when recognition does not come. It means remembering that obedience positions us for spiritual strength and deeper intimacy with Him.
Christ’s example reminds us that surrender is not the end of our story—it is the pathway to transformation. As we follow Him, God is forming in us a heart that reflects His love, His humility, and His power.
Today, pause and ask yourself: Where is God inviting me to follow Christ’s example more fully? What would it look like to surrender completely?
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the example of Jesus. Thank You for showing us that humility and obedience lead to life and restoration. Forgive us for the times we have chosen pride over surrender and control over trust. Shape our hearts to reflect Christ’s mindset. Teach us to walk in humility, to serve with love, and to trust Your will above our own. We surrender ourselves fully to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
