Out Of Sight But Still On Our Mind

Out Of Sight But Still On Our Mind
Acts 1:8-11
Pastor Aaron Robinson

The story of the ascension of Christ is often overlooked.  We usually focus on resurrection and Pentecost, but the story of the ascension is just as important because it highlight Christ enthronement to the right hand of God the Father.  Luke paints this picture to remind us we haven an advocate in the heavenly court.  The disciple witnessed this ascension as a reminder of the victory Christ had achieved, defeating death.  Forty days after resurrection they see the one lifted on a cross now lifted on a cloud. An acknowledgment of the power the Messiah processed.

What does this mean for us some 2000 years later, you ask?  It is a reminder that we have an advocate who sits high but has dwelled low.  We have Prince who walked with and communed with the people but now speaks on behalf of the people. It is a reminder that the empires of this world have no rule over us.

The text tells us that he ascended until he was out of sight, but it also reminds the disciples to keep his mission in sight.  It is a call to stay focused on the mission until he returns.  Luke points to this event to encourage follower to keep Jesus on their mind while they are waiting on the promise.  How do you keep him on your mind?

We must do the work and witness to the people.

  • What is the work you ask?
  • Go where God send you.
  • Meet people where they are.
  • Lift up others when you can.

  • What does it mean to witness?
  • Share our story about Christ’s impact on our lives.
  • Let others know He lives.
  • Reflect his message of love to the world.

On this ascension Thursday we remember, whom we follow, why we follow him, and where he's leading us.  We are called to do the work and to witness to the world about the one who witnesses for us on daily basis.  Like the disciples we're reminded just because you don't see him doesn't mean we shouldn't be thinking about his mission. Just because he isn't visible doesn't mean we should not be trying to live his vision.

Prayer:  Most gracious and merciful God, we thank you for giving us your son as a reflection of who we could become and leaving us with the lessons to help us get to where you want us be. We keep our eyes stayed on you so we might reflect you in all we do.
