Who Rules Your Sabbath?

Who Rules Your Sabbath || Luke 6:5 || Sis. Carolyn J. Satcher
“5And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”

“27And he said unto them, the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27). What is the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of rest on the seventh day, commanded by God to be kept as a holy day of rest, as God rested from creation. The Biblical Sabbath day is Saturday, the seventh day of the week, although now it is predominantly practiced on Sunday. In the book of Exodus the 20th chapter, God gave a commandment what we should do on the Sabbath Day.

“8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”(Exodus 20:8-11). This is the original Sabbath Day commandment but when Jesus came, he fulfilled the Sabbath and let us know that he, Jesus, is Lord of the Sabbath.

This chapter shows us that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. On the Sabbath Day, Jesus disciples were hungry and they went through the corn field and plucked them some corn to eat. The Pharisees questioned Jesus about this and he related the story of David and his men being hungry on the Sabbath day, how David went into the house of God and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him, which was only lawful for the priest to eat. Once again Jesus related to them that he was the Lord of the Sabbath.

Also on another Sabbath Day, Jesus healed a man with a withered hand. He knew their thoughts and asked them “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do evil, to save life, or destroy it. Evil begets evil and brings only sadness to others, saving a person’s life brings joy to them and the world. Since Jesus came and fulfilled the Sabbath day, we no longer have to follow the Old Testament definition of the Sabbath directly. If a person becomes sick or get shot with a bullet and has to go to the hospital, we must help them so that they want die.

In today’s world people sometime have to work on Sunday for a living. Doctors, nurses, what would we do if they did not work on Sundays. We also have to eat also in order to keep our bodies nourished. Many years ago, Christians practiced not doing things on Sundays because of the old Sabbath laws. Some of our mothers cooked on Saturdays instead of Sundays, they didn’t iron, wash, look at television, children couldn’t go to the movies and many other things Christians were not able to do on the Sabbath.

I believe as long as we worship God in Spirit and in truth, a particular day doesn’t matter to Him. The Jewish people had hundreds of laws they were not able to follow and we as Christians thank God that we don’t have to follow them. Allow Jesus to rule your Sabbath.

Prayer: God in the name of your son Jesus thank you for your son coming to fulfill the law because man is infallible and unable to fulfill all that has been commanded of us. Thank you for the two greatest commandments you gave us to follow, Love you with all our heart, soul, and mind and our neighbor as ourselves. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
