Humility is a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness. Humility is also freedom from pride or arrogance.

There is no greater example of humility in the entire Bible than we can find in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul writes of Christ in Philippians that we should “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil 2:3-4).

Paul expresses his by counting himself as the least of the apostles and the chief of all sinners. Epaphroditus, another one whose humility showed worked with Paul. He poured his life into helping Paul and the church so much that he nearly died from it. He literally risked his life in order to be Paul’s servant and right-hand man. He was humble.

Some of the traits of an humble person are:

  • An humble person is not boastful.
  • An humble person is grateful for everything in life.
  • An humble person does not belittle others
  • An humble person is not jealous
  • An humble person is not proud
  • An humble person is not rude
  • An humble person is not vain
  • An humble person is not materialist
  • An humble person is not possessive
  • An humble person is truthful
  • An humble person will put themselves in someone else’s shoes
  • An humble person is not self-righteous
  • An humble person is not judgmental
  • An humble person take things in stride
  • An humble person is not self-destructive
  • An humble person is not arrogant
  • An humble person does not dwell on the past
  • An humble person is not egotistical
  • An humble person will not get defensive

Being humble is the best characteristic of anyone. People will appreciate one who thinks more of others than themselves.

Prayer: Lord, please keep me humble so that I may please you and love others as I love myself. Amen.
