A Keep-Pushing Thankfulness

A Keep Pushing Thankfulness ||  Psalm 46  ||  Merdice Cumberbatch

Have you ever had a bad day on a day you expected to be a good day? I’m almost one hundred percent certain that the answer is yes because if you live long enough you would realize that no one is exempt from adversity.

A few months ago, I woke up intent on conquering the day ahead by completing my daily goals and by executing my visions for the upcoming weeks ahead. Then, out of nowhere chaos set in. An unexpected turn of events stopped me right in my tracks and then the focus was no longer on the plans I had had to conquer my day. Well, what does one do? Simply put, ‘keep pushing’. At that time, this term was a bit of advice recently given to me by my mentor. I thought to myself, “hmmm, that's easier said than done.”

How can we keep pushing in what seems like turmoil mixed in with confusion and chaos? The answer lies in the text from the book of Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. v2 Therefore we will not fear.” To keep pushing we must first have faith. When we have faith, we then learn to trust and be thankful in knowing that God is working it all out on our behalf. We can retreat to God in our time of trouble. God is near wherever we might be in our lives v6-9. God can turn our chaos into comfort, and our confusion into clarity.

How then do we know God is working it all out on our behalf? Because He said so! God commands v.10, “Be Still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.” God commands the forces of chaos (Ps 46:2–3) and the nations (v. 6) to stop their raging and recognize Him as God. This is where learning to trust in God sets us apart from nonbelievers.

I Thessalonians 5:18, Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God. Thank you, Lord, for carrying us through yet another week of Lent. As we move forward on this journey let’s not forget to be Thankful!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you! Thank you in advance. Thank you for this moment. Thank you after the fact. Thank you in times of sadness. Thank you for feelings of hopelessness. Thank you for the good days. Thank you for the bad days. Thank you for the chaos. Thank you for peace. Thank you for your blessings. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am truly grateful. Grateful for your promises. Grateful for your Word. Grateful because I know that no amount that I do can equal what you give back in return. Amen and Ase!
