The Essence of Community

The Essence of Community || Matthew 26:26-28 || Deacon Bernard Rush
“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'”

During the Last Supper, Jesus instituted more than a ritual meal—He established a profound sense of community. Through the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup, He initiated a new covenant, embodying sacrifice, grace, and unconditional love. He beckoned His disciples to partake in His life, to sustain one another, and to advance His mission unitedly.

This moment underlines the core of Christian community. We are not intended to journey through life in isolation. Lent invites us to contemplate how we are nurturing and fortifying the communities around us. Are we extending generosity and companionship to those in need? Do we practice forgiveness as Christ exemplified? Are we inclusive, ensuring that all have a place at our table?

As we approach the celebration of Easter, let us devote ourselves to enriching our relationships with God and with each other. In the spirit of Jesus gathering His disciples, may we assemble in faith, offering mutual support and love, ever mindful that His sacrifice binds us together.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You established a community of faith around Your table. Help us to mirror this in our lives. Open our hearts to those in need, teach us to love without reservation, and unify us with others through Your grace. May our lives be a testament to the love You have fostered within us. Amen.
