Step-by-Step Belief
John 5: 2-9
Deacon Pacia Love
My granddaughter is finally walking. Hooray for Kira! Well, it was no surprise to her. Let me explain: every day Kira would stand up, take one step and immediately fall right back down. This process, which my granddaughter believed in continued for months. She had faith and Step by Step Belief in knowing that it would happen. She would walk!
In this passage of scriptures, in Jerusalem by the sheep gate there is a pool. The apostle John is telling us the pool Bethesda will be Jesus’s first stop in Jerusalem. Jesus sees as he enters the pool area the multitude of people were sick, blind, and lame. They were waiting for the moving of the waters. What does that mean? An angel, of the Lord went down at certain seasons, into the pool and stirred up the waters, whoever stepped in first, after the stirring up of the water was made well from whatever disease with which he/she was afflicted.
This man who had been 38 years in his sickness, Jesus saw him an asked a question. Do you wish to get well? Does this sound like an odd question to you? It did to me at first, however this man knows what Jesus is asking. Do you believe in miracles? Do you still believe that you can be healed or have you given up hope of ever being healed? I love the response this man gives by saying “I’m helpless, but “I’m not hopeless!” This man had faith and believed he would be healed if only someone put him into the pool when the water is stirred up. To his surprise, a miracle happen Jesus gave a command and because of his faith he was healed.
As we journey through this Lenten season, we must continue our personal relationship with God! We must believe that Jesus Christ is our savior and have faith by taking the first steps of obedience, repenting of sin, and turning our life over to his control and power to change our life.
Listen, I know life can be hard and yes, we will stumble and sometimes even fall. Just remember to stand back up take another step! Never give up hope, and always believe - only then, will a miracle happen.
Prayer:
Dear most gracious God, thank you for your love and the many blessings and miracles you continue to give us throughout our lives. We will always trust and believe in you. In Jesus name Amen.
