An Ear for God's Word
An Ear For God’s Word
John 8:47
Sis. Angelle Sullivan
Have you ever been in a room and it felt as if everyone understood what was going on except for you? Well, I would sadly admit I often attend football games and I’m clueless to the calls and plays during the game. When attending these games, it seems as if everyone knows what the referee is going to call, and what is even more amazing, they understand the hand gestures and the colors of the flags thrown on plays!
I’m always mesmerized by how knowledgeable people are of this game and how clueless I am. In John 8:47 Jesus explains, “Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” Well, I believe I could use this verse to explain my ignorance to football, simply put I’m just not a fan, therefore I don’t understand. However, looking at the verse what was Jesus implying. Jesus tends to keep his words very simple in explaining that only those who belong to God will hear, accept, and apply his words.
So, the question then becomes, how do I come to hear God? Well, let’s use my football exposure for example. See, I have the same accessibility to information about the game of football as the millions of fans around the world. The difference is, I choose to arrive at games uninformed and then depend on those sitting around me to explain, based on their passion for the game. Yes, these people tend to watch sports tv all year long, keep up with the latest roster, and even spend money on their team to show their loyalty.
I believe Jesus is saying if you position yourself like a football fan before God, you will have the ears to hear. Yes, God wants you to study Him all year long, review His roster of miracles, and contribute your earnings to show your loyalty to Him!
During this Lenten season, God wants us to reposition ourselves to Him and let us know it's time to stop showing up on Sunday's uninformed waiting for someone else to explain His game, when He has given each of us AN EAR TO HEAR!
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, you are so amazing! I thank you for the grace and mercy that you continue to show, even when we are walking in ignorance. Please help me to remember that you have given me the ears I need for direction, wisdom, peace, patience, love, joy, and so much more. However, I have to be willing to do my part, which is to study and meditate on your words, because YOU are just a call away ready to speak. In Jesus Name, AMEN!
